Seniors and the outdoors:

Mounting evidence is proving that not only is the outdoors important for young people but for sensiors, too. While both groups benefit from being in nature, they have different health reasons for doing so.

Nature deficit disorder in children has become widely known but research is showing that nature can have sweeping benefits for the elderly, too.

Several recent studies have concluded that seniors who spend ample time outdoors may experience less anxiety, depression and stress than those who do not. While remained in blue and green outdoor areas, such as grassy parks or on the edge of koi ponds, they enjoyed increased feelings of renewal, restoration and spiritual connectedness. Even relatively mundane experiences in such places, such as hearing a bee buzzing among flowers or the sound of water, had a tremendous impact on overall health.

But while the young and the elderly both benefit from being in nature, they may have very different health reasons for getting outside.

For older people, even small experiences in nature, such as hearing ocean waves wash against the shore, had a favorable impact on overall health.

In a study published in 2002, Japanese researchers posed a simple question: in a group of seniors who otherwise seem similar, why do some live longer than others? To find out, the researchers gathered the records of more than 3,000 Tokyo residents who were between the ages of 74 and 89 in 1992, charted how many of those seniors were alive five years later and then tried to explain the variations in longevity.

Two subsets of the participants jumped out: people who lived near parks and green spaces where they could walk and those who spent more time in sunlight. Both groups were far more likely to be alive after five years than those who did neither. But how does nature help seniors cope with the specific health issues that they typically face?

Here’s what science shows:

1. Improvement in short-term memory loss.
Several studies show that walking in nature has memory-promoting effects that walks in other places don’t.

In one study, University of Michigan students were given a brief memory test and then divided into two groups. One took a walk around an arboretum, and the other took a walk down a city street. When the participants returned and repeated the memory test, those who had walked among trees did almost 20 percent better than they had the first time. The people who had taken in city sights instead did not consistently improve.

Nature walks boosted memory in seniors much more than walks in city settings. A similar study on depressed individuals found that walks in nature boosted working memory much more than walks in urban environments.

2. Reduction in inflammation. When inflammation flares up, it tends to be associated with a wide range of ills, including autoimmune disorders, inflammatory bowel disease and depression. Spending time in nature may be one way to help keep those ailments in check.

In one 2012 study, students who spent time in an evergreen forest in China had lower levels of inflammation than those who spent time in the city. In another, elderly patients who had been sent on a weeklong trip into the forest showed reduced signs of inflammation. There were some indications that the woodsy respite had a positive effect on those patients’ hypertension levels, as well.

3. Cancer prevention and an immune system charge. Preliminary studies have suggested that spending time in nature—in forests, in particular—may stimulate the production of anticancer proteins, and those escalations may last up to seven days. Waterfront areas were found to be especially comforting places, where older adults found spiritual connectedness and relaxation.

Studies in Japan, where shinrin-yoku (or forest-bathing) is considered a form of preventative medicine, have also found that people living in areas with greater forest coverage have lower mortality rates from a wide variety of cancers. And in a 2010 review of research related to this effect, scientists noted, “all of these findings strongly suggest that forest environments have beneficial effects on human immune function.”

4. Enhanced relationships and diminished senses of isolation. Getting outdoors promotes social interaction, whether through meeting new people or spending time with friends and loved ones.

Natural environments, in particular, provide older adults with opportunities for nonweight-bearing physical activities and physiotherapies, such as swimming. Waterfront areas are comforting sites for spiritual connectedness and for escaping the strains of later life, such as boredom, isolation and loneliness. In addition, spending time in natural places increases one’s sense of purpose and accomplishment.

5. Lower overall risk of early death. Nearby green space seems to be especially important for the health of residents in urban environments, according to a Dutch study of 250,782 people.

In a follow-up investigation, the same research team found that a wide variety of diseases were less prevalent among people who lived in close proximity to green space. And a 2016 paper published in Environmental Health Perspectives found a similar connection: greater exposure to greenness was associated with a 12 percent lower mortality rate. The biggest improvements were related to a reduced risk of death from cancer, lung disease and kidney disease.

It’s clear that an increasing body of medical evidence suggests that regular contact with the natural world can help provide senior citizens with health, happiness and a longer life. So, while children and young adults may use green and blue spaces to alleviate attention deficit disorder, to de-stress and to unplug, seniors benefit by using nature to lessen memory loss, boost the immune system, be socially active and prolong life. In effect, not only do we need outdoor playgrounds for children, but sheltered benches for grandparents to watch them.

Ganesha also known as Ganapati, Vighnaharta, Vinayaka, Pillaiyar and Binayak, is one of the best-known and most worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon. His image is found throughout India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bali (Indonesia), Bangladesh and Nepal. Hindu denominations worship him regardless of affiliations. Devotion to Ganesha is widely diffused and extends to Jains and Buddhists.

Attired in an orange dhoti, an elephant-headed man sits on a large lotus. His body is red in colour and he wears various golden necklaces and bracelets and a snake around his neck. On the three points of her crown, budding lotuses have been fixed. He holds in his two right hands the rosary (lower hand) and a cup filled with three modakas (round yellow sweets), a fourth modaka held by the curving trunk is just about to be tasted. In his two left hands, he holds a lotus above and an axe below, with its handle leaning against his shoulder on the right side.

Although he is known by many attributes, Ganesha's elephant head makes him easy to identify. Ganesha is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences and the deva of intellect and wisdom. As the god of beginnings, he is honoured at the start of rites and ceremonies. Ganesha is also invoked as patron of letters and learning during writing sessions. Several texts relate mythological anecdotes associated with his birth and exploits and explain his distinct iconography.

The Wisdom of Ganesh:
Shiva & Parvati used to play with two sons, Ganesh and Kartikeya. The Gods had given them a marvelous fruit. Each boy wanted to get it for him alone. Their parents explained them that the nectar of the Supreme Knowledge and of Immortality was hidden in that fruit. To get the fruit, both had to compete. The winner should run three times around the world and come back first.
Kartikeya left at once. Riding his peacock, he flew in the sky, stopping at every sacred place on his way, praying and worshipping the gods.
Ganesh was fully aware of his stout body; it slackened off him badly. The rat, his vehicle, was rather slow and would not be able to beat Kartikeya.
But his wisdom suggested him the right solution. He turned round his parents,

Shiva and Parvati, showing a deep devotion. When they asked him why he did not start his journey around the world, he replied : "My parents Shiva and Shakti are the Whole Universe. In Them is located the World. He do not need to go further". Of course, he won the contest, and the fruit.
This legend emphasizes the importance of cleverness; Ganesh is a strong symbol of this quality which is always the best against force, speed or physical strength.

According to the legends, lord Ganesha wanted to get married with the girl who would be more beautiful than his mother, Parvati. But no girl could be found who was more beautiful than Parvati, so he did not marry with any girl and remained bachelor. (Some says that no girl wanted to marry Ganesha as he had elephant head).

In this scenario, his mother made Ganesha to get married with a banana tree. We can see in West Bengal during the Durga Puja, Ganesha is associated with plantain (banana) tree, the “Kala Bo”. The Kala Bo is draped with a red-bordered white sari and vermilion is smeared on its leaves. The new sari indicates her role as a new bride; people see it as symbolizing the wife of Ganesha. In Bengal, Durga is the mother of Ganesha, Sarsavati and Laxmi.

Another pattern of legends says that Ganesh is the owner of Buddhi or Riddhi and Siddhi; these qualities are sometimes personified as goddesses, said to be Ganesha's wives. Ganesh had two sons Shubh and Labh from these wives.

We can see at many worship places written: “Om Sri Ganeshav Namah, Riddhi Siddhi Shubh Labh”. It means we invite lord Ganesha along with his family in our worship. If we invite only lord Ganesha in our worship, then he will stay for a short time and leave for his family. When we invite and worship him with his family, he stays with us to bestow his blessings forever. Lord Ganesha is god of wisdom and intellectuals. The combination of Ganesha (wisdom) and Riddhi (Method or intelligence) yields Shubh (auspiciousness). The combination of Ganesha (wisdom) and Siddhi (Spiritual power or perfection) yields Labh (Profit).

The Importance of Durva Grass to worship Lord Ganesha in Hinduism:
The Durva grass has long been used in Hindu rituals, especially by those who worship Lord Ganesha. Durva means “which is cut or eaten by animals” in Sanskrit. The Rig Veda and the Atharvana Veda mention the Durva grass. In the Bhavishya Purana, Durva is stated to have appeared from Lord Vishnu’s hands and thighs as he bolstered Mt. Mandara during the Samudra Manthan. Moreover, in the Vamana Purana, Durva surfaced from the tail of Vasuki, the snake used to churn the Ocean during the same Manthana.

Legend has it that, in the Puranas, once while Lord Ganesha was meditating, a celestial singer disturbed him to extend an invitation of marriage. After the god rejected her proposal, she cursed him. This caused a burning sensation on his head for which Ganesha placed Durva on his head. The Durva grass offered relief and resulted in recuperation.

However, the most popular of the fables is that there was once a demon called Analasur who petrified the world and the gods. The gods asked Lord Shiva to protect them from the demon and in return Shiva pointed them to Lord Ganesha. So, they then approached Ganesha who fought a ferocious battle with Analasur and ended up swallowing him to protect the gods.

This built-up a lot of heat in his body and caused him duress. The Lord Indra then gave him the moon to wear on his forehead, and Lord Vishnu gave him a lotus flower, but none could cool him down. The Lord Vishnu made it rain on Ganesha, but to no yield. Finally, 88,000 sages conducted Archana for the Lord with 21 blades of the Durva grass which cured his stomach.

It is for this reason that Lord Ganesha is worshipped with 21 blades of the grass on Ganesh Chaturthi each year. Durva is also known to attract the Ganapati Principle the most. The use of odd numbers (minimum of 21) of the grass further promotes the entry of the divine energy into the idol. Durva is tied together, dipped in water for freshness, and then offer to the deity’s feet first and then the rest of the body. This is said to attract Ganesha the best as the principle of a deity is strongest though the feet of an idol.

What is the present sinario of the people belongs to general category or upper class in India:

According to laws laid Down by the government of India forward caste or class, also known as upper caste or class, forward community, and General class is a term used in India to denote groups of people who do not qualify for any of the affirmative action schemes operated by the government of India. These schemes are known as Reservation Benefits. Varying by region these people now a days covers 25 per cent of the population of India.

At the other end, those groups who qualify are listed as Other Backward castes, Scheduled castes and scheduled tribes can take advantage of defined quotas amongst other benefits for education, special government schemes, government employment and political representation.

Being extremely generous the leaders runs the government of India always take advantage of these big strength of people in their desired ways because the lists are subject to change from time to time, dependent upon social, educational and economic factors!

It remains an extremely surprising fact that, although lists are produced for those groups entitled to take advantage of the quotas, there is no such list for the Forward or Upper caste group!!! If a person does not belong to any of the listed groups then that person is by default a member of a group classed as Forward caste!!!

Here are some bitter examples of the one among those who belongs to General Category or the upper caste in India:

The one among those who can be ruthlessly abused by using the caste word at any time anywhere!

The one among those most persecuted people because of being discriminated in the Constitution of the country as the upper caste!

The one among those who are highest oppressed people not only by the the Constitution but by the government of India!

The one among those who can be arrested without any inquiry unde ar the Atrocity Act 89!

The one among those people to whom NCSC and NCST were constituted to punish!

The one among those people special SCST court has been opened in every district to punish them!

The one among those for which no commission has been made for their wellfare since independence to tilldate!

The one among those whose living standard is considered so high that no government scheme is made for them for their benefit!

The one among those who teach their children by paying four times the fees in other schools in the school, they are poorly destitute!

The one among those who has to face legal discrimination in employment, promotion, home allotment etc.!

The one among those who cannot contest elections in 131 Lok Sabha seats and 1225 assembly seats in the country but have to vote!

The one among those who presently feels that "they voted to permit some politicians to loot them in the way they desire" however they voted to bring change to delegate power to a good government.

The one among those who are off and all requested that your whole heart is in the interest of the country.

Despite these much discrimination,
"It is the religion that prevails, the unrighteousness is destroyed, there is goodwill in the living beings, the welfare of the world"~is the spirit they are keeping at their highest are the people belongs to upper class.

Time is now fully riped off for the people belongs to upper class to teach a lesson to the politicians of the India.

Think on this atleast once,

20 ways to plastic-proof your routine:

We love nature, but our dependence on plastic is harming the environment.
Half of the plastic we use annually can take anywhere from 400 years to over 1,000 years to disintegrate. We as consumers have the power to get action from manufacturers by changing the way we spend our money. So why not use our purchasing power for the good of our environment?
If you have a Facebook account please click on the title below and watch this video very carefully and understand your responsibility towards the natural environment of where we reside:

If we all do our part daily, we can help to protect nature on our planet Earth. Here are our 20 favorite ways to get you started:

1. Use an eco-friendly bamboo toothbrush with natural bristles.

2. Use natural fiber dental floss coated with beeswax. Traditional dental floss is made of nylon or teflon, the same stuff in non-stick pans.

3. Avoid non-stick pans coated in teflon. Teflon breaks down into microplastics, which are tiny pieces of plastic less than five millimetres. Not only are you eating it, but these tiny particles go through the sewage system into our waterways and oceans. We then eat the fish that eats these tiny plastic particles.

4. Say no to disposable plastic razors.

5. Use hair products without plastic ingredients like silicone and petroleum. Read labels carefully! Better yet, go waste-free. Try a natural shampoo bar instead of one with plastic packaging and quench your tresses with natural plant-based oils.

I am very sure that many of us are unaware of this extremely bitter reality of present living system, wherein, eighty percent of all global industrial and municipal wastewater is released into rivers without any treatment!!!

6. Leave microplastics out of your skincare routine. Look for natural products without exfoliating microbeads in your facial and skincare products. Some products offer sea salt and plant-based scrubs like crushed kernels of apricot and coconut husk.

7. Use a cotton wash towel, a hemp fiber “cotton round,” or organic cotton instead of disposable cotton swabs and rounds to deep cleanse your facial pores with toner or to remove make-up. While cotton disintegrates, the chemicals in cotton can leach into our environment or harm wildlife.

8. If you love to go fishing on your days off, be mindful to take your fishing gear home with you, especially your fishing lines. Ghost nets and ghost fishing gear like nylon lines, hooks and nets will continue to travel with the ocean current where they trap and tangle fish, birds and large marine life such as whales, for up to 1,000 years after their owners lose them or throw them off board.

I must draw your attention on one more bitter reality of our living system that forty-six percent of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a giant area of garbage as large as Texas, is made of ghost nets!!! This giant patch is currently moving through gyres, which are the highways of ocean currents worldwide, creating a vortex of tangling and choking garbage that pulls in nearby marine life and plastic garbage!!!

9. Skip balloons at parties and celebrations. Balloon scraps can choke and strangle animals and marine life.

10. Just say no to glitter. Shiny and tiny, this microplastic can be confused for food by fish.

11. Carry a reusable water bottle. Don’t let your bottle be one of the 1 million plastic bottles which are bought every minute worldwide.

12. Carry a reusable plastic-free thermos for your morning coffee or tea.

13. Always keep a few reusable bags rolled up at home, at work and in your bag. Remember to also carry smaller reusable bags for fruits and veggies. More than 1 million bags are used every minute according to UN Environment.

14. Pack your own lunch in a reusable plastic-free container. It’s healthier and saves money. Why not petition your favourite lunch food spot to replace plastic packaging with sustainable alternatives like BYO (bring your own) lunchbox and coffee cups.

15. Say no to plastic straws. Opt for reusable metal straws to enjoy your smoothie.

16. Opt for natural fabrics and textiles. Reduce the amount of clothes with synthetic plastic fabrics in your wardrobe. They release tiny microplastic dust particles that end up in our ocean and in our lungs. Even synthetic carpets and rugs release microplastics dust particles.

17. Use eco-friendly detergent, dishwashing sponge made of natural fiber and cleaning products that won’t harm our rivers, coral reefs, and oceans.

18. Opt for plastic-free packaging if you can. Recycle your existing plastic. Reduce your plastic use. Even biodegradable plastic doesn’t fully degrade.

Of the 14 percent of plastic packaging that is recycled worldwide, only 5 percent is retained for use after an expensive and lengthy sorting and reprocessing!!!

19. Don’t litter. Nearly one third of the plastic packaging used worldwide become litter that ends up clogging our city streets, sewage systems and ultimately travel to our rivers and oceans.

20. Reducing plastic pollution will require big action from governments and businesses. Take civic action and adopt behavioral science in your approach.

No matter our differences, it’s best to identify one value that all community members can agree to work toward, for example, a clean park. Think about the people in your community. Identify one priority that matters.
Define their behaviors. What are easy steps that can fit into their budget, lifestyles, daily routines and schedules?

Have a discussion on solutions from the community for the problem. Work together to define and envision success. Reach agreement by identifying solutions that will work in the interest of your stakeholders (community, businesses and local officials).

Form a pact with your community through an action plan that’s short and easy to understand, free of jargon, user-friendly, affordable and realistic for local officials, businesses and community members to test out.
Be sure to add a section with the proposed resources you’ll need such as number of people and steps for getting volunteers and supplies through donations or funding as part of your budget.

Always set a realistic timeframe and offer a short summary of successful results. Than, share your plan with your local government representative, businesses and community board. The more you approach officials and your community board with a solution, a clearly defined plan, a list of people who will take ownership to implement the plan and answers for funding the plan, the more likely your local government and community board will be open to testing out your proposal.

Everything about the great Hindu festival JANMASTAMI:

According to Hindu scriptures this is the story of Lord Krishna’s birth is:
There came a time when Mother Earth was unable to bear the sins and cruelty committed by evil kings and rulers. Mother Earth then prayed to Lord Brahma, the creator of the Universe, to relieve her from these sinful kings. Lord Brahma prayed to the supreme Lord Vishnu for reincarnation and to relieve the Mother Earth from these evil rulers. Lord Vishnu accepted the request and assured to defeat tyrannical forces.

The ruler of Mathura, Kansa was one such evil king. He had a sister named Devaki, who was married to Vasudeva. The day Devaki and Vasudeva got married, a voice from the sky forecasted that Devaki's eighth son will bring an end to Kansa’s rule and will kill him.

Frightened Kansa held the couple. He then vowed that he will kill every child of Devaki and Vasudeva. Seeing their first seven children being killed by the cruel Kansa, the imprisoned couple feared giving birth to their eighth child. One night Lord Vishnu appeared before them. He told them that in the guise of their son, he will return and rescue them from Kansa's autocracy.

Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of God Vishnu is worshiped as a supreme God in Hinduism. Born in northern India (around 3,228 BCE), Lord Krishna’s life marks the passing of the Dvapara age and beginning of the Kal yuga (which is also considered as the current age). References to Lord Krishna can be found in several Hindu mythological books, especially in the epic Hindu book, the Mahabharata.
Lord Krishna is also described as an important figure in the Bhagavata Purana. This is another Hindu epic book that dates to the 10th century B.C. In the text, Lord Krishna is described as the charioteer for the warrior Arjuna who had guided him morally and gave military counsel to the leader.

The figure of Lord Krishna is depicted as having blue or blue-black skin. He holds a flute (bansuri) and sometimes accompanied by a cow or cowherd. Krishna is also known by many other names, such as Govinda, Madhusudhana, Vasudeva and Mukunda. In the books, he is also depicted as a child who performs playful pranks like stealing butter.

Krishna Janmashtami also known simply as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. It is observed according to Hindu luni-solar calendar, on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Shrawana of the Hindu Calendar, which overlaps with August and September of the Gregorian calendar.

It is an important festival particularly to the Vaishnavism tradition of Hinduism. Dance-drama enactments of the life of Krishna according to the Bhagavata Purana (such as Rasa lila or Krishna Lila), devotional singing through the midnight when Krishna is believed to have been born, fasting (upavasa), a night vigil (jagarana), and a festival (mahotsava) on the following day are a part of the Janmashtami celebrations. It is celebrated particularly in Mathura and Brindavan, along with major Vaishnava and non-sectarian communities found in Manipur, Assam, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and other regions.

Krishna Janmashtami is followed by the festival Nandotsav, which celebrates the occasion when Nanda Baba distributed gifts to the community in honour of the birth.

Hindus celebrate Janmashtami by fasting, singing, praying together, preparing and sharing special food, night vigils and visiting Krishna or Vishnu temples. Major Krishna temples organize recitation of Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita. Many communities organize dance-drama events called Rasa Lila or Krishna Lila. The tradition of Rasa Lila is particularly popular in Mathura region, in northeastern states of India such as Manipur and Assam, and in parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat. It is acted out by numerous teams of amateur artists, cheered on by their local communities, and these drama-dance plays begin a few days before each Janmashtami.
